Project Runway!

Six days and counting until the big reveal!!!

Becky is hard at work at her Project Runway creation, which will be revealed before over 600 folks at the Burlington Marriott next week!  We enjoyed the "dress" rehearsal (without the dresses) last night, with Deb practicing her best runway walk (which leaves much room for improvement).  The best part was watching all the designers and models trying to guess each others creations, based on music selection and choreography on the catwalk.

Although all 627 tickets sold out in 30 minutes, we might have access to a couple of last minute tickets... if you are interested, let us know!

Have a great weekend,
Becky and Deb

Chairs for Sale! How Much Will You Pay?

We so fell in love with these upholstered chairs at one of our favorite antique sources recently, and $1,850 seemed fair for the pair.

Today I came across this chair at another source, selling (along with its twin) for $14,500!  Would "WTF" be too strong a term (cue my mother looking WTF up in the texting dictionary I gave her for Christmas after she asked me if LOL meant Lots of Love or Laugh Out Loud)?

Maybe I'll forgo the four chairs, pick up this print instead, and save myself over $16,000.  Yep, let's do that.

Snakeskin and Scale (No Offense Jessica Simpson)

Did you catch this image of Jessica Simpson at her baby shower?

Hmmm - not sure where I stand on this.  (And I've borne twins, so I'm not intending to pick on size here...)

What do you think of snakeskin on an (ahem) large scale?

via Houzz

I happen to love it in the above bathroom.  I think the pattern generally looks less garish in black as opposed to blue, and the designer has kept the other patterns and colors in the room to a bare minimum.

But, generally, I think a little snakeskin goes a loongggg way, don't you?

If blue snakeskin was an absolute must for Jess' big day, maybe one of these options would have worked better...

How do you like your snakeskin?

Trend Alert: Pattern Mixing

If you pay even passing attention to fashion, surely you've noticed the intense "pattern mixing" trends to hit the runway this Spring...

Tory Burch

What do you make of it?  I like... to an extent.  I feel of all the trends for Spring, this is probably the hardest to execute for the average Joe (or Josephine).  You'll need a pretty tight game plan to make the look eclectic yet still cohesive, paying careful attention to color and scale.  (One of my twins likes to intensely mix patterns, but her picture would appear in that "Don't!" fashion section with the person's eyes blocked out to protect her - ahem her mother's - privacy.)

When it comes to interiors, one of my favorite designers who successfully pulls off the pattern play is  Jamie Meares of the killer blog I Suwannee and its sister store Furbish...

John Loecke and Jason Oliver Nixon are another design duo who expertly layer pattern and color...

What do you think?  Not for the timid or cautious, but who wants to be timid and cautious?!

Haitian Hope, and the Haiti Poster Project

As I write this, my husband is on his way to the airport to pick up a very special visitor - an 8 year old Haitian earthquake survivor named Jodeleine.  Not only did Jodeleine lose her pregnant mother and sister in the disaster, but part of her leg as well.  Thanks to the work of some very special people, and donations on the part of American Airlines and Children's Hospital in Connecticut, Jodeleine is arriving on a medical visa to receive treatment that will hopefully allow her to wear a prosthesis, and thus be able to walk again.

My heart bleeds to think of what it would be like to lose my mother and sister ever, much less as a 6 year old child.  Even worse, it hurts to imagine one of my daughters left behind without me or her sisters.  As a mom, I've felt compelled to help in at least one very small piece of Jodeleine's journey.... which is why my husband stands at Logan tonight meeting a late night flight from Haiti with flowers, a teddy bear, homemade cards and my strict instructions to make her feel like a princess when she exits the plane.

Jodeleine will stay with us overnight before heading on to receive her medical treatment.  I thought long and hard about how to prepare my three little girls for her stay.  I sat them down last night with an atlas, identified Haiti and defined what is an earthquake, amputation, and so on.  I left out some significant details, like the loss of her mother and sister, because I do want to protect some part of their 1st grade innocence, and would prefer for it to not occur to them that losing me or a sister is even in the realm of what's possible (because in a just world, it shouldn't be, right?).

When my girls expressed nervousness about Jodeleine's visit (in particular that she doesn't speak English and has an amputated leg, and other details like would she be allergic to the cupcakes we made to decorate with her), I stressed that she's just a kid, just like they are kids.  English speaking or not, black skin or white, fully functioning legs or not, they're all just young girls with hopefully a common language of teddy bears, crafts, sparkly clothes, toys, and the fun we've tried to prepare for her.

One of my twins drew this card to welcome her at the airport:

My Ellie, whose drawings are usually quite literal, has the blondest hair, bluest eyes and palest Irish skin (think translucent) you could possibly imagine.  I saw it as some kind of fascinating unspoken form of solidarity that she drew herself as black alongside Jodeleine in her welcome card.

Special thanks to my friends who contributed thoughtful gifts and "New England" clothes for Jodeleine!

I'll leave you with these hopeful images, from the Haiti Poster Project to benefit Doctors Without Borders...  Help contribute by buying yours here...

Best,
Deb

Saf's Nursery on Apartment Therapy

Apartment Therapy offered up the sweetest nursery on its blog the other day.  Lucky little Saf has a fab  personal pad designed by his creative folks, using his grandfather's personal collections as inspiration.

Love how the IKEA dhurrie (their "splurge" for the room) contrasts so nicely with the deep navy walls.

Saf's mom crafted this DIY mirror as a knock-off/alternative to the pricey Restoration Hardware rope mirror.  See her step by step instructions here!

Saf not only got his name from his grandfathers, but he also received a ton of their cool stuff!  Good thing Mom's got the eye to pull it all together so beautifully.

And here's the proud room owner!  He's still such a little guy... Let's hope he doesn't become obsessed with Diego wallies, Lighting McQueen sheets, or a Toy Story piggy bank in which case this cohesive design scheme is shot to hell!

Weekend Find

I scored these fierce leopard heels at an antique market this weekend.  Guess how much?  $12!  Guess, do they fit?  Nope, not really!  But, they're so fine looking I figured a tabletop could wear them as an accessory.

The gold spikes absolutely make the shoes....

I'm not the only one to appreciate the sculptural quality of a nice pair of spikes as decorative accessory (images via Pinterest)!

Plus, my tabletop finds them more comfortable than my metatarsals would...

Lighting in Agate

Of all the "market" picks from this month's Lonny Magazine, I found the Eclipse Agate Chandelier to be the most compelling.  Mind you, I'd be unlikely to ever actually own it, and the spikes scare me a bit (better be sure that sucker's installed properly before unsuspecting Aunt Agnes is impaled during Thanksgiving dinner), but I love that it throws a vibe that is simultaneously sleek and graceful.

It comes in a sconce, too!  Wouldn't these be perfect in a bachelor pad?

I've been noticing agate lighting cropping up quite a bit here and there, including in homes touched by Kate Walsh and Nate Berkus...

1st Dibs features a pretty hot pair of Willy Daro bronze and agate lamps...

...though I think I prefer my agate in more subtle tones...

Not quite ready to dive in?  You could ease in with an agate finial from etsy seller Vntage Queen.

The effect is stunning when the agate itself is lit...

Hope you had a great weekend!
